Nothing is more rewarding than bringing home your new baby. Preparing for that moment can take months and ensuring the new baby is warm and comfortable is one of the basic needs you can provide. Making a simple baby blanket for that special moment does not have to take a great deal of time or money, and can create a memory that lasts a lifetime.
A baby's first blanket bought from the local department store just does not have that special meaning as one that was made by hand. With a small amount of effort and the right material you can easily create your child's first blanket that will last them long into their teens and beyond.
First, you want to select a material to put around your baby. We recommend polar fleece as the best fabric to use. It is very soft to the touch, is very durable and can provide the needed warmth.
Second, you want to select the appropriate pattern and color scheme. Many fabric stores will have a multitude of patterns and colors to choose from in the polar fleece material you will be using. From sports teams to cartoon themes, you will be able to select from a wide variety to make your special baby blanket.
Once the pattern is selected, you will need to select another piece of fleece in a solid color to serve as the complimentary backing of your patterned section. Doubling up the two pieces will ensure the blanket is warm and cuddly for years to come. Have the clerk cut about 1-2 yards of each piece depending you're the size of blanket you want to create.
When you are ready, lay each piece on a card or dining room table so they are on top of each other. Take a sharp pair of scissors and cut about a 3 by 3 inch square out of the corner of each section. Continue cutting strips about 3 inches into the fabric with each strip being about 1 inch wide. Once you have cut about 10 strips, begin to tie the strips of each section together double knotting the two pieces so they do not come apart. Continue this process until all the edges are tied together.
After you have completed tying off your blanket, stretch the edges so the blanket lies flat on the table. Throw the blanket into the dryer for about 10-15 minutes on the fluff cycle and your blanket is ready to go.
A simple baby blanket can be created in minimal amount of time but will provide many hours of comfort to your baby girl or boy.
A simple baby blanket can be a great gift for a new baby and are very easy to make.
